I've decided to write about something dear to my heart.
Please do not get offended.
Please do not message me with rude remarks.
Here we go.
The other day I came across a post that read the following:
" Only at BYU Idaho do you get graded on modesty.
Sorry I don't dress like a nun "
Mmmmph.....question
Since when does dressing modestly mean you're dressing like a nun?!?
Nuns are virtuous women who do exemplary Christ-like work.
I don't know about you, but I definitely don't see anything wrong with that.
can someone please explain this to me?!
Secondly,
BYU Idaho has an honor code.
We all know what's in it.
We all signed it upon entering the school.
It's also constantly reminded as you walk around campus.
there are many posters that read " BYUI Honor Code. I honor it"
If you haven't seen them,
take a moment and look around.
Whether you chose to live by it or not,
I think that's a personal choice.
if you don't know what the BYU Idaho Honor Code is,
you may take a look by following this link.
Nowadays, when you hear about modesty, you think about
an eskimo all covered up.
But does anyone really know what "modesty" even means?
I did a little bit of research. Here is what I found.
I did a little bit of research. Here is what I found.
the dictionary states:
mod·es·ty[ ˈmädəstē ] noun:behavior, manner, or appearance intended to avoid impropriety or indecency.
and this is what the LDS website states.
Modesty is an attitude of propriety and decency in dress, grooming, language, and behavior. If we are modest, we do not draw undue attention to ourselves. Instead, we seek to “glorify God in [our] body, and in [our] spirit” (1 Corinthians 6:20; see also 1 Corinthians 6:19).
I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have heard,
"dressing modest means dressing like a mom"
NO NO NO NO. and a thousand times NO
Modesty has nothing to do with dressing like a nun or a mom.
It goes above and beyond that.
Society has seriously distorted our image of "modesty"
Lets all keep in mind that the adversary is out to distract us
from the path God intends us to be on.
The adversary has A LOT of contributing factors.
When I was a child,
my mother always advised me to dress in what I felt comfortable.
I won't deny that I wore shorts above my knee and
sleeveless tops on terribly hot days.
All I cared about was fitting in and not having to worry
about suffering a heat stroke.
As a teenager,
this applies to ALL teenagers,
all we want is to fit in.
brand name clothing.
hip shoes.
wait, do kids these days still say "hip"?

wait, do kids these days still say "hip"?
well,
Now that I am older,
modesty has taken on a different meaning to me.
Modesty,
is a way of life.
It's not about the clothes you wear,
rather it's about what YOU portray to the world.
How you view yourself and how you act is how others will view you.
As much as we try to destroy labeling one another,
it's always going to happen.
The greek work for modesty is kosmios.
derived from "kosmos"
which signifies
"orderliness, self control, and appropriateness"
Modesty is NOT about dressing like a nun.
It's NOT about dressing like a mom.
Rather,
it's about cultivating humility, propriety,
and deference within ourselves.
You should not dress or act in a certain way in order to impress anyone.
Dress, speak and behave in a manner that demonstrates
where your heart lays.
My heart lays with my Father in Heaven.
My mom has always said,
if you second guess yourself,
then it wasn't for you.
"Prioritize strength, dignity and good deeds,
and then dress {and act} accordingly"
and for some laughs,
take a look at me, as a tween.
I'm pretty sure that those outfits will be back in fashion soon.
HA
